A message from the President - June 2010

Conference Update

Preparations for the 2010 ALLA/NZLLA Joint Conference are nearing completion with the official conference website in full swing available at http://www.crosscurrents.org.au . The program offers over 19 presentations with the challenge for delegates choosing which concurrent session to attend.

We are delighted to welcome Saul Eslake – Program Director, Grattan Institute, Melbourne, as the official conference key note speaker who is presenting a paper on Prospects for the Australian Economy after the Global Financial Crisis.

Day Two kicks off with Waleed Aly, Lecturer in Politics, Monash University, who is presenting a paper on Civil Liberties and counter-terrorism: a necessary trade off. The Conference continues to receive tremendous support from ALLA industry partners with LexisNexis as the 2010 Conference Platinum Sponsors; Thomson Reuters - Gold sponsors, Gale Cengage Learning and SAI Global - Silver sponsors; CCH – Bronze sponsors and First Software Solutions – Bronze sponsors. The Conference Committee look forward to seeing you in Melbourne on 29 September – 1 October 2010.

New President of IALL

Our own Petal Kinder is the first Australian appointed as President, International Association of Law Libraries (IALL), Board of Directors. Petal's appointment will run for three consecutive years commencing in September 2010. Petal has been a highly active and passionate member of the Australian Law Librarians' Association over many years and has contributed enormously to our profession. We look forward to following Petal’s achievements.

Constitution

The drafting of the ALLA constitution, although a complex and time consuming process, is progressing very well. It is estimated the Constitution and Memorandum of Understanding will be submitted for vote at the 2011 ALLA Annual General Meeting. If the membership votes in favour of the model, the timeline to implement the new model is estimated to be six to twelve months after the 2011 AGM.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the 2010 ALLA and NZLLA Joint Conference in Melbourne.

Kind regards, Leanne
