Library and information studies qualification

Librarian

To become a Librarian you will need an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in library and information studies that has been accredited by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). A list of accredited courses is available on the ALIA website. Postgraduate programmes are usually 1-2 years full time, or 2-3 years part time. Admission requirements vary, but in most cases a Bachelor’s degree is a prerequisite.

Library Technician

To become a Library Technician you will need a Diploma of Library and Information Services which has been accredited by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Further information about the core and elective units that must be completed and a list of accredited providers is available on the ALIA website. The Diploma usually takes approximately 20 hours per week over the course of a year.

Legal knowledge

A Librarian or Library Technician is not usually required to have a law degree in addition to their qualification in library and information studies but having an understanding of legal systems and the law-making process is an advantage.
