Meet the ALLA Board


Elizabeth.jpgElizabeth Langeveldt,
ALLA President

Elizabeth Langeveldt is currently the Library Manager at HWL Ebsworth Lawyers, a law firm which currently comprises 194 Partners, 980 staff in total, and has offices in nine locations across Australia. Elizabeth conducts legal and business research and training.

Elizabeth has previously worked at two other law firms, briefly for the Commonwealth Government and also worked in an academic library as a Faculty Liaison Librarian.

Alex Cato,
ALLA Vice-President

Alex is a Senior Research Librarian at Ashurst. Based in Sydney, she is also President of the New South Wales division of ALLA.

She has presented at the 2013 ALLA conference, published in the ALL and delivered local presentations. Outside of ALLA she writes the monthly technology column, 'A bit of bytes' for the Informed Librarian Online.

Alex has a Bachelor of Arts in Communication (Information Management) (Hons) and a Masters of Legal Studies.

Michael.jpgMichael Gavan, 
ALLA Treasurer 

Michael Gavan is Know-How Team Leader and Research Librarian at Minter Ellison.  He provides legal research training and research support to the Partnership.  Michael also delivers research training to the wider legal profession through seminars provided by the Leo Cussen Centre for Law and the Law institute of Victoria, as well as to law librarians, through the ALLA 'Finding the Law Online' (FLO) program.  

Michael has been an ALLA / ALLG member since 1998 and joined the ALLA board as treasurer in 2015. He has a LLB, M.Ed, B.Ed, Grad Dip Lib, BA (Multi Disc.), and Dip Gen Studs.


Karen.jpgKaren Rowe-Nurse, ALLA Secretary 

Karen Rowe-Nurse is the Law and Business Liaison Librarian for St Benedict’s Library at the University of Notre Dame Australia, Sydney Campus. She has worked in law libraries over the past twenty years across law firms, tribunals and academic law libraries. Karen teaches within the university and is currently undertaking the first subject of her MBA.

Career highlights include receiving an international conference scholarship to attend the British and Irish law Librarians’ Association 2011 conference, developing a new academic law library in Sydney for Notre Dame; convening the 2013 ALLA conference and joining the board of the Australian Law Librarians’ Association. 

Karen is the current ALLA national president. She completed the first subject of her MBA in 2014 and has qualifications in law, librarianship and university teaching.

General Board Member and ALL Editor 

Mary Greenfield is the librarian at Eleven Wentworth Chambers, in Sydney. She has worked in libraries for many, many years, 22 of which have been in law libraries.

Mary has been an active member of ALLA for twenty years, including positions on the ALLA NSW Committee, National Committee and two years as president of ALLA nationally. She has also been editor of the Australian Law Librarian, twice, the present since 2014. Mary has also convened two ALLA conferences, held in Sydney in 2000 and 2007. She also convened the international Joint Study Institute in 2004. Mary is a member of the ALLA National Board, in the position of Past President.

Petal Kinder, 
General Board Member. 




Petal Kinder served as Court Librarian at the High Court of Australia from July 2005 – September 2015.

Prior to coming to the High Court Petal was the Manager of the Library and Information Services at the Federal Court in Melbourne and before the Federal Court she was a lecturer in the Law Faculty at Monash University where she designed, implemented and taught legal research courses at undergraduate and graduate levels.

She has been a member of the Australian Law Librarians’ Association for a number of years, serving in various capacities on the National Executive including a term as President of ALLA. Petal is presently the Immediate Past President of the International Association of Law Libraries (IALL).

General Board Member and CPD Coordinator 

Phil Mullen has worked in Libraries for well over 20 years, where he has worked in Law and Newspaper Libraries.

For much of his time he has been a solo law librarian and this has shaped how he views the challenges faced by librarians in the 21st Century. His chief concerns during his time as a librarian have been the development of training and marketing programs to deliver the best service to his library customers.

With Michael Marriott he received the Australian Law Librarian (ALL) Ted Glasson Award in 2012 for the following article, "Redesigning an Information Services Portal" 2012 ALL Vol 20(3) 119 -124. With Cindy Martin he co-wrote "Talking about an eRevolution" for the NSW Law Society Journal November 2014.

He has been a member of ALLA for over 10 years; presently he holds the ALLA NSW and National CPD positions. He is a past convenor of the Sterling Group (Sydney Law Firm Librarian Group). At the moment he is the Australian Library & Information Services Manager for K&L Gates. He has a BA Dip Lib (UNSW); B Leg S (Macq); Dip KM (UTS).

Kirsty.jpgKirsty Wilson
General Board Member and Web Coordinator

Kirsty Wilson is the Senior Reference Librarian at the Law Library of Victoria. Prior to this she was a liaison librarian at the University of Melbourne Law Library. 

Kirsty has been an ALLA member since 2010 and is the national web co-ordinator.  This role includes overseeing the ALLA website and ALLA Twitter account, moderating the ALLA-ANZ e-list, handing member requests regarding the online membership database, and publishing the ALLA e-news.  

Kirsty has a Bachelor of Arts (Hons), Master of Library and Information Management, and is currently completing a Bachelor of Laws.
